Granma newspaper gives details on Tuesday of a
report released by the American non-partisan organization Public
Campaign in which it reveals the names and amounts received by
representatives and senators in Capitol Hill.
According to the report, the man providing the money is Mauricio
Clever-Carone, a Cuban-Italian of the extreme right who presides
over a committee registered in Washington as the US-Cuba Pac,
which represents the interests of the Miami-based organization
‘Council for the Freedom of Cuba’, comprised of a group of
millionaires of Cuban origin led by Remedios Diaz Oliver, a
businesswoman in Miami who was accused years ago of federal tax
evasion.
The list of lawmakers receiving money to maintain the hostile
policy against Cuba is long and it includes Democrats and
Republicans. It is headed by Lincoln Diaz Balart (R-Fl), who
received $366,964; his brother Mario Diaz Balart (R-Fl) with
$364,176; Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fl) with $240,050; and
Republican senator John McCain with $183,415. All the others on
the list are Democrats.
