Actions against Cuba during the Richard Nixon Administration Revealed

“Richard Nixon was convinced that Fidel Castro was an obstacle to US omnipotence and had to be removed from its path”, said Kornbluch, director of the Chile and Brazil Project of the George Washington University’s National Security Archives.

On Monday, this non-governmental organization spread several documents declassified by the US authorities, which reveal that the two heads of state planned several actions against these and other nations to prevent the emergence of new Allendes and new Castros”.

According to this researcher, Nixon showed an obstinate attitude of intolerance toward the Cuban government and “insisted that the US would not change its hostility toward the island as long as he were the President of the United States”.

Among the documents brought to light by the aforementioned Archives is a secret memorandum belonging to a meeting held on December 9th, 1971, between Nixon and the Brazilian dictator, in which General Vernon A. Walters acted as translator.

In this meeting, Medici asked Nixon if “they” should support the Cuban exiles that “have forces and could topple the Castro regime”, to which Nixon responded: “we should (do it), as long as we don’t push them to do something we can’t support, and as long as our participation remains unknown”

The declassified documents also prove that “Brazil played an important role on supporting the US for the overthrowing of Allende in Chile”

This is “a hidden chapter of cooperation in the intervention to topple the Chilean government, now emerging from the declassified information” assured Kornbluch.

The analyst asked the Brazilian government to open the military archives from the 1970’s, where a good part of the information the US is still concealing should be found.
